2016 Coolmore Classic Field, Barriers & Odds

Coolmore Classic

The coveted 2016 Coolmore Classic is one of the great Group 1 feature thoroughbred races conducted at the picturesque Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney as part of the state’s illustrious Autumn Racing Carnival.

While featuring as the main event on Ladies Day at Rosehill Gardens each year, the Coolmore Classic shares a particularly exciting race card with a pair of Golden Slipper lead-up events in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) and the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m), as well as the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m), Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) and two Group 3 races; the Sky High Stakes (1900m) and Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m).

The 2016 Coolmore Classic will be held at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 12 March 2016.

On the 1st of November, the Melbourne Cup 2016 races off!

The Coolmore Classic is a great middle distance gallop run over 1500m. It is open to fillies and mares only and is a quality handicap event worth an impressive $600,000 in prize money.

As one of the best feature races for fillies and mares during the autumn carnival, and because the winner of the Coolmore Classic is exempt from ballot for the $1.5 million Group 1 Doncaster Handicap, the race is always an intense and thrilling affair.

Coolmore Classic Lead Up Races

There are some truly terrific earlier autumn events that serve as the perfect lead up for the female runners on the Coolmore Classic campaign. The Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) a fortnight earlier is a good preparatory race but the main lead-up race for fillies and mares on the way to the Coolmore Classic is the Group 3 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill in February.

Miss Personality was the inaugural winner of the Coolmore Classic when the race was first run in 1973.

The Coolmore Classic originated as a Principal race, reaching Group 2 status in 1980 before finally being installed as a Group 1 event in 1984. For more information on group 1 racing visit Ladbrokes.com.au

The race has undergone a number of name changes over the years. While it is registered as the T A D Kennedy Stakes, the race has been known as the Orlando Wines Classic, Rosemount Wines Classic, Winfield Classic, Marlboro Classic, NSW Thoroughbred Breeder’s Stakes, Fillies & Mares Classic and in recent years as the Coolmore Classic.

Many of Australia’s champion females have claimed victory in the Coolmore Classic including multiple Group 1 winner Typhoon Tracy (2009), Tuesday Joy (2007) and Sunline (2002 & 2000).
