Alverta Wins 2010 Coolmore Classic

March 22nd, 2010

Paul Messara’s classy mare Alverta gave the Scone-based trainer his maiden Group 1 victory on Saturday when she took out the $600, 000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill.

Alverta ($18), who only recently returned to racing after her spring retirement saw her unable to get into foal, beat home the Gai Waterhouse-trained Gold Water ($17) by two lengths with the $5.50 favourite, Palacio De Cristal, an unlucky third.

Installed as the $6 second elect, Bart Cumming’s filly Faint Perfume ran a disappointing race to finish a listless ninth.

The Peter Moody-trained Set For Fame, an early favourite leading up to the race, was scratched from the event on Saturday morning with an elevated temperature.

It was a blow for Moody who was then left with no chance of securing back-to-back wins in the Coolmore Classic following his withdrawal of last year’s winner Typhoon Tracy late last week when the top-rated mare was allocated 61kg for the event.

Alverta has had a sensational comeback career this autumn, winning the Group 2 Breeders Classic two starts back and now an illustrious Group 1 victory, proving that her failure at stud was a blessing in disguise.

Eventual runner-up Gold Water led early on while Alverta, ridden by Tye Angland, charged up on the outside overtaking Gold Water at the 300m mark to secure the win, giving Angland his second Group 1 victory.

There is little doubt Alverta is Messara’s favourite horse, as she gave him his first city win, first black-type victory and then his first Group 1 success.

The six-year-old daughter of Flying Spur has now won eight of her 35 career starts for $934, 125 in prizemoney.

Messara has the Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick next month next on the agenda for Alverta, as he hopes to secure another Group 1 win for her before she is retired as a broodmare again.

The other feature races held at Rosehill on Saturday included the $400, 000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) where the Gai Waterhouse-trained Theseo claimed his fifth Group 1 victory; and the $150, 000 Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) won by Hot Danish.
