2011 Coolmore Classic Nominations

March 15th, 2011

The 2011 Coolmore Classic is set to take place this Saturday March 19 at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse and the nominations for the Group 1 fillies and mares feature have been released.

Twenty-one horses make up the nominations for this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), which continues the elite horse racing action in Sydney this season.

Of the Coolmore Classic nominees Gerald Ryan’s classy Redoute’s Choice mare Melito is allocated the top weight with 59.5kg.

A dual Group 1 winner having taken out the TJ Smith Stakes and the Winter Stakes last year, four-year-old Melito resumed with a first-up victory in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on February 19 before finishing fifth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 5.

Ryan has also nominated Melito for the $175,000 Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at the Rosehill meeting this Saturday, which could be a more viable option due to her hefty Coolmore weight.

The other top weights for this year’s Coolmore Classic are Peter Snowden’s dual Group 1 winner Purple (55.5kg) resuming for the season and seeking her first win since taking out the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington back in November of 2009, and the Grahame Begg-trained Palacio De Cristal (54.5kg) who finished third to Alverta in the 2010 Coolmore Classic 12 months ago.

A number of recent Sydney Autumn Carnival winners have earned a crack at the Coolmore Classic 2011.

These autumn winners include the Mick Price-trained daughter of Encosta De Lago Aloha who won the Group 3 PFD Food Services Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 5, Les Bridge’s mare Jersey Lily who came into Coolmore contention winning the Listed Wiggle Quality (1400m) at Warwick Farm a fortnight back and the in-form Miss Gai Flyer for Peter Moody coming off successive black-type victories including her last-start win in the Listed Moonee Valley Fillies Plate (1200m) on February 25.

Other notable nominees for the 2011 Coolmore Classic include last year’s Crown Oaks winner Brazilian Pulse who resumed with a first-up second to Do Ra Mi in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday and consistent Canny Lad mare Graceful Anna who has finished second at her last three starts.

The final field of acceptors for the Coolmore Classic 2011 and the barrier draw for Saturday’s marquee race will be out on Wednesday and published right here so bookmark this site.
