Final Field & Barriers for 2011 Coolmore Classic Released

March 16th, 2011

The 2011 Coolmore Classic final field and barrier draw have been released with 17 horses accepted for this Saturday’s showdown at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

One of six Group status races on the Rosehill race-card for this Saturday March 19, the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) is a quality handicap for fillies and mares.

Opening up the field and Coolmore Classic betting markets is the fact many of the top-rated chances in this year’s race have suffered a blow with wide barrier draws.

Horses to draw poorly for the 2011 Coolmore Classic now with some work to do on Saturday include the Gai Waterhouse-trained duo of Montana Flyer (barrier 14) and More Strawberries (barrier 17), early favourite Melito (barrier 11) and the Peter Snowden-trained Purple (barrier 13).

Montana Flyer is still likely to start at the top end of the Coolmore Classic odds at Luxbet, however, as the smart Flying Spur five-year-old is well-weighted with just 52.5kg and coming off a win in the Group 3 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on February 26.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Melito is the 59.5kg topweight of the field, the dual Group 1 winning daughter of Redoute’s Choice stepping up 1.5kg in the weights from the 57kg she carried to finish fifth behind Danleigh in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm last-start.

Good barrier draws and lead-up form bring a number of females right into Coolmore Classic contention with Palacio De Cristal, Lady Lynette, Aloha, Jersey Lily and Warpath our early picks to back through Luxbet.

Palacio De Cristal has drawn ideally in barrier two, the Grahame Begg-trained Encosta De Lago five-year-old set to improve second-up after running fifth to Montana Flyer in the Millie Fox last start.

Lady Lynette will have the inside running on Saturday after drawing on the rails in gate one, the Tasmanian-trained six-year-old also coming off a last-start fifth when crossing two lengths back from Pinker Pinker in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) at Flemington last Saturday.

But it is last-start winners Aloha, Jersey Lily and Warpath who boast the biggest claims to become the 2011 Coolmore Classic winner.

Aloha, from the stables of Caulfield trainer Mick Price, is an up-and-coming four-year-old who caught the attention of punters with a blistering first-up win in the Group 3 PFD Food Services Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 5.

Beating her rivals by a minimum margin of two lengths, Aloha will now seek back-to-back Group wins on Saturday from barrier 10 with Glen Boss in the mount.

Jersey Lily has drawn ideally in barrier six for the Coolmore and with just 52.5kg on her back, Les Bridge’s promising Catbird five-year-old a good chance to claim another victory to add to her Listed Wiggle Quality (1400m) win at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago.

Warpath is another one on the punters’ radar for Saturday, after the John O’Shea-trained Reset four-year-old claimed an emphatic 2 ½ length victory in the Listed Aspiration Quality (1600m) at Warwick Farm last weekend.

It was the grey’s fourth successive win and Warpath could add a fifth to her impressive record after drawing well in barrier four and being one of the 52kg lightweights of the field.
