Weight Could Be Steps In Time’s Undoing In 2013 Coolmore Classic

March 22nd, 2013

Trainer John O’Shea is seeing red over the decision to slug Steps In Time a 57.5 kilogram weight in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse tomorrow March 23, 2013.

Steps In Time will carry the second top weight in the race, being handed just half a kilogram less than top weight Streama.

O’Shea feel that a fair weight for Steps In Time in the 2013 Coolmore Classic would be more like 57 kilograms.

“I think she’s been disgracefully weighted,” O’Shea said.

“I thought she was entitled to carry 1 1/2kg less than what she’s got. I also thought the three-year-old fillies were entitled to carry more.

“My horse is carrying 2 1/2kg more than last year when she couldn’t win the race.

“She’s since won two Group races and a Listed race and been penalised for her consistency.”

Three-year-old Flying Snitzel will have 52.5 kilograms on her back in the 2013 Coolmore Classic, while Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes winning filly Bennetta will carry just 52 kilograms in the race.

Steps In Time has won both her race starts this autumn, winning the Group 2 Thoroughbred Breeders Classic at Rosehill first-up before claiming the Listed Wiggle Stakes by three and a half lengths last run.

However, O’Shea feels her recent results do not warrant 57.5 kilograms in the 2013 Coolmore Classic.

“I’m not being critical of the handicapper, I know he’s got a job to do, we’ll just agree to disagree on this one,” O’Shea said.

“It’s my opinion. I think Steps In Time can win the race, but there are a lot of things against her – a lot of statistics say she can’t win.”

However, handicapper Damien Hay tends to disagree with the trainer and is backing his decision to give Steps In Time her current weight.

“She won the Breeder Classic first-up in good fashion, beating Red Tracer, and then spanked Streama second-up by more than three lengths,” Hay said.

“There isn’t much between Streama, Steps In Time and Red Tracer.”

Steps In Time has won eight of her 16 race starts and has earned more than $600,000 in prize money.
