Talented four-year-old A Time For Julia will be aiming to continue her strong start to 2014 in easily her biggest test to date this weekend after being included in nominations for the major Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Securing four wins and four places from only 10 career starts to date, A Time For Julia has returned to the track in blistering form in 2014, winning the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) first-up, finishing second behind leading sprinter Red Tracer in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) and claiming the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute (1200m) ahead of a classy field last weekend.
With an appearance in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) looming as the major target this preparation, trainer Peter Moody is confident the Redoute’s Choice mare’s great form will translate into a maiden Group 1 title this weekend.
Claiming 15 wins and 13 places from 34 races so far, Red Tracer will also be aiming to continue a typically great start to her current preparation in the Coolmore Classic.
Following her near-two length victory over A Time For Julia in the Millie Fox Stakes first-up, the talented Dane Shadow mare overcame poor position rounding the final bend to finish third behind Appearance and Not Listenin’tome in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) last weekend.
One of the many stars of trainer Chris Waller’s Rosehill stables, Red Tracer looks set to contest a particularly busy 2014 autumn campaign, having been included in early nominations for the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) in April alone.
Waller is set to dominate the final field for the 2014 Coolmore Classic, having also nominated leading contenders Arinosa, Catkins and Royal Descent.
Having secured nine wins and six places over 32 races to date, Arinosa is yet to hit peak form in 2014, despite claiming a strong Warwick Farm barrier trial on March 11th.
Finishing 10th of 12 in the Bellmaine Stakes first-up and ninth of ten in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) most recently, Waller is hopeful a strong run in the Coolmore Classic will deliver the necessary form for a successful tilt at the Queen Of The Turf Stakes in April.
Catkins has finished outside the places only once in 12 races since the beginning of 2013, and has returned to the track in 2014 in near-career best condition, producing a strong turn of foot to overcome fellow-Coolmore Classic nominee Steps In Time in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) first-up before jogging home to win the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes by two lengths last time out.
Arguably offering Waller his greatest chance of success in the 2014 Coolmore Classic, Catkins has shown a keen ability to overcome even the worst of barrier draws and will be particularly hard to beat in current form.
Following a consistent 2013 spring preparation that arguable peaked when second behind Streama in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 21st, Royal Descent could only manage fourth in the Millie Stakes first-up this year, but has reportedly taken to work well over the past two weeks.
Trainer Kris Lees has elected to nominate in-form stable mates Thump, Sharnee Rose and Lucia Valentina for the 2014 Coolmore Classic, each coming in off the back of strong performances at Group level last time out.
A total of 26 hopefuls have been nominated for an appearance in the 2014 Coolmore Classic, with a final field of 20 and barrier draws scheduled for release on Wednesday morning.
