Waller To Saddle 3 in 2014 Coolmore Classic Final Field

March 19th, 2014

A final field of 17 talented runners has been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s featured Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, including in-form mare A Time For Julia.

Securing two wins and three places from seven starts prior to 2014, A Time For Julia has returned to the track in scintillating form this preparation, winning the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) first-up before placing a competitive send behind leading sprinter Red Tracer in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m), and returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute Quality (1200m) last weekend.

Having drawn the ideal barrier 3 for the Coolmore Classic, trainer Peter Moody is confident the exciting Redoute’s Choice mare is capable of breaking through for her maiden Group 1 title this weekend.

As expected, trainer Chris Waller has dominated the final field for the 2014 Coolmore Classic, having accepted positions for Catkins, Royal Descent (barrier 13) and Arinosa; leading hope Red Tracer removed from nominations after being allocated the top weight.

Exciting talent Catkins has been one of the country’s most consistent runners since debuting on course in late 2012, finishing outside the places in just one of his 10 starts throughout 2013.

Securing 10 wins and six places over a total of 19 starts so far, Catkins has returned to the track in near-career best form this preparation, producing a strong turn of foot to beat fellow Coolmore Classic acceptor Steps In Time in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) before strolling home to win the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) by two lengths last time out.

Yet to secure a victory at Group 1 level, Waller is confident the classy Dubawi mare will finally break her top-flight drought this weekend, despite drawing the somewhat awkward barrier 14.

Four-year-old Royal Descent produced a particularly strong maiden campaign over the summer and autumn of 2013, winning the Season’s Greetings from ATC Maiden (1200m) on debut and building to back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) ahead of fellow Coolmore hopeful Dear Demi  on April 20th.

Unable to secure another race win since that major event, Royal Descent is yet to reach peak form in 2014, finishing fourth in the Millie Fox Stakes first-up on March 1st.

Amassing nine wins and six places in 32 races, Arinosa is offered a keen chance to turn around a poor start to 2014 in this weekend’s Coolmore Classic, having been allocated the ideal barrier 4.

Waller has underlined the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) as the major target for the Dash For Cash mare this season, however form will be vital if to accept a position in that event’s final field.

Arguably the most experienced of owner John Singleton’s current crop of runners, Dear Demi was one of the most consistent runners of 2013 not to secure a Group 1 title, unluckily finishing in the places in no fewer than four race’s at Australia’s top level.

Finishing third in the Wiggle Stakes first-up two weeks ago, the Dehere mare will have to overcome the slightly awkward barrier 10 if she is to return to winning ways in the Coolmore Classic.

Unlucky to not secure her third-straight Breeders’ Classic title when second by a nose to Catkins first-up this season, Steps In Time is surprisingly yet to place in a Group 1 event, having lined up for five since debuting on track in 2010.
