Dear Demi ran on for a credible fifth in the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) first-up on February 28th, and is sure to take valuable condition from the competitive hit-out in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), according to trainer Clarry Conners.
Posting a commendable race record of seven wins and a further 13 minor place finishes from her 38 career starts to date, Dear Demi appeared to be in prime position to pounce upon rounding onto the final straight in the Guy Walter Stakes, but was unable to match the late pace of Danesiri and Cosmic Endeavour.
Revealing he was somewhat disappointing with the credible first-up performance, Conners told AAP he has identified talented three-year-old First Seal as the major threat for success in the 2015 Coolmore Classic.
“I was a bit disappointed she didn’t go better first-up,” Conners said.
“She was up too close in a fast-run race but she still went OK.
“And she has come out of the race well. I will give her a nice gallop in the morning to top her off.
“First Seal will be very hard to beat but we will be trying.”
Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level in the 2012 edition of the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), Dear Demi returned in similarly impressive form over the 2013 autumn; winning the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) before placing fifth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and second in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) most notably.
Placing third in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and second in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) most notably through spring, the daughter of Dehere was unable to make much of a competitive impact over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, but returned to good form over spring in placing second in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) and winning the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) most notably.
The 2015 Coolmore Classic final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
