Arabian Gold without doubt registered career-best form over the 2014 Australian racing calendar, and while returning to racing in less-than convincing form two weeks ago, is more than capable of a return to the winner’s circle in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).
Posting nine wins and a further three minor place finishes over her 21 start career to date, Arabian Gold settled in prime position within the field of 16 in the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) first-up, but was unable to match the late pace of eventual winner Danesiri and finished eighth.
Revealing a return to Brisbane in winter as the major target for the four-year-old this time in, trainer David Vandyke told Racing Ahead he is pleased with the work completed and condition displayed by Arabian Gold over the last fortnight and is confident of a competitive performance in the 2015 Coolmore Classic.
“I thought that her first-up run was only fair and I would have liked her to hit the line harder, but part of that may be that she is a bit bigger and stronger this preparation,” Vandyke said.
“She has progressed well and she does go well second-up.
“She galloped well on this morning.
“Kerrin McEvoy came out to Warwick Farm to ride her and he was pleased.
“She defeated her work partner and she ran nice time and she recovered well.
“We are pretty excited going forward into Saturday.
“We have the Doncaster, The Queen Of The Turf and The Doomben Cup.
“We know how well she races in Queensland and her pet distance is probably 1800 to 2000, but in saying that she needs a few runs under her belt before she gets to that journey.
“Saturday will tell us a lot, it is going to be a pretty good race and it will decide which direction we will go from there.”
Steadily building to the task upon resuming in 2014, Arabian Gold hit peak condition over the late stages of autumn and through winter; winning each of the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2200m), Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) and Group 2 The Roses (2000m) before finishing a close second to fellow Coolmore Classic nominee Tinto in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).
The 2015 Coolmore Classic final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
