2016 Coolmore Classic the Target for Amicus

February 9th, 2016

Trainer Chris Waller has underlined the 2016 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 12th as the major target for Amicus this time after the mare returned to racing for an impressive win in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) over the weekend.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Hugh Bowman allowed the mare to stride forward and take a handy position on the heels of the race’s early leaders; receiving an ideal run in transit before mustering a strong late turn of foot to carry a race-high 58kgs to victory.

Waller was understandably pleased with the performance of the Fastnet Rock mare first-up this time and is confident the 2016 Coolmore Classic figures as an ideal target for the four-year-old third-up this season.

“Amicus was only just beaten in the Coolmore last year and she would still get into the race pretty well at the weights,” Waller told The Sunday Telegraph.

Bowman delivered a typically brilliant performance aboard Amicus for success in the Breeders Classic and is confident the conditions of the 2016 Coolmore Classic coupled with her form underlined the Coolmore Classic as the perfect race.

“She is a good horse,” Bowman said after the race.

“At the 100m I was pretty confident she would get there, she is a winner.

“I feel 1200m-1400m is her best distance range. I’m going to interfere with Chris’s program but the Coolmore would be the logical race for her.

“She would be third-up into a Coolmore and that seems a good target for her.

“The 1500m of that race is OK for her as I feel she is not a real miler. She feels like one but is not as strong at that trip.”

Amicus has been a strong and consistent performer since first appearing on course competitively in 2014; posting a commendable five wins and four minors through eighteen career starts.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of the Thousand Guineas (1600m), Amicus resumed in spring last year for consecutive wins in each of the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) and Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m).

While failing to figure in either of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) or Group 2 Tristarc Stakes, Amicus returned to the paddock after placing a credible fifth in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Derby Day.
